WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today released the following statement after the National Institute on Retirement Security released a report on the current state of American retirement savings, including the fact that nearly half of all American households currently have no money saved for retirement:
“In a recent poll, 92 percent of Americans said we faced a retirement crisis—and this study shows us the American public knows what they’re talking about. Middle class workers don’t have the pension benefits they did decades ago, and we’ve got to find a way to bridge the gap so that our future retirees aren’t faced with a life of poverty.”
McCaskill, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Special Committee on Aging, helped lead a hearing today focused on the issue of retirement security, and what could be done to ensure that low- and middle- income households could save for a comfortable retirement.
