KOHL RELEASES STATEMENT ON SOCIAL SECURITY TRUSTEE REPORT

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Herb Kohl, Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, released the following statement on the Social Security Board of Trustees' annual report, which presents the current and projected financial status of the trust funds. The report, released today, states that the Trust Funds are projected to be exhausted in 2037, four years sooner than the estimate in last year's report.

"The state of the economy is affecting everything-every region, every industry, and every American. The Social Security program is no exception. The Trustees' report shows that its long-term stability is weakening at a time when beneficiaries are relying on their monthly checks more than ever. The Aging Committee will hold a hearing in June to consider the best approach for ensuring the program's solvency and improving benefits for those who most need them."
